Afternoon painting, life drawiing

I wasn't really in the mood to paint today but I forced one out anyway. It's pretty simple, but it looks all right:

I also had workshop this evening, so some new life drawing quick poses:

Afternoon Speed Painting

Love in the club! I was on a roll so I decided to keep up with some personal projects while I have the chance. Here's the product of about 4-5 hours off and on over the course of this afternoon:

This was sort of a test as to how many colors I could jam into one painting. The answer is lots of colors!

Life drawings, painting

Life drawing workshop session was awesome today. Another male model, and he had great hair. I had an absolute blast drawing him.

I also have spent a few hours on this over the past two days or so. Not my favorite, but for a speed painting it's all right. It might be something to come back to in the future:

New painting, comic

I've been trying to make more time for personal paintings within the eye of the hurricane that is my working life. I'm making a push on architecture, so here's an afternoon painting of a mall:

This is a mall I might actually want to go to
I've been doing a lot of medieval fantasy stuff lately, it feels good to go back to some sci-fi inspired stuff. I also went with sort of 70's coloring, which I haven't seen a lot of in modern sci-fi stuff.

I used to do a 5 days a week comic at my old alma mater, the University of Wisconsin's Badger Herald. Even though I've long since graduated, I still do comics for them from time to time, usually about games or game news. Here's one I did recently about my thoughts on industry layoffs:

Laughter is the best medicine! Right? Am I right? ...Guys?

Evening painting and more life sketches

I have been having trouble finding time to do paintings for myself lately, so here is a painting I crammed into today while listening to the Adele Skyfall theme on loop for 4 hours:

Life drawing workshop this evening and (gasp!) a rare male model has appeared! 1-3 minute speed poses only today:

I have trouble drawing male models, probably because I only encounter them 1/10th of the time I go to a life drawing session. There is probably some joke to be made about girls being more willing to take their clothes off, but it's really late and I can't come up with anything. It was good to draw a dude, men are so lumpy.

Life drawing, odds and ends

I'm doing a life drawing workshop in the evenings for the next couple of weeks, so I'll be putting up some poses, like these:

Also a friend asked me to do some specialty potion bottles for his D&D campaign last Sunday. It was kind of last minute rushed, but I had some fun with it:

New year, new pieces

Here is a mini dump of some recent pieces I did. The first is a design for a mountain troll village:

I took a lot of time to think about the trolls, how intelligent they were, what sort of materials they would use, and how their houses would vary depending on the materials at hand.

Early sketches and reference

Front and back views of different house types, a sample interior
I also did this temple - the idea was that it had been built severel hundred years previously by a secular race and was later repurposed by religious fire-worshipping zealots. Therefore I had to create a design for the temple that had a dichotemy to it. I drew it in its original forest, then in its later incarnation where the humans had surrounded it with a seaside town:

I chose a blade shape for the roof because simple shapes tend to better reflect the atmosphere of their surroundings. In the forest it feels serene, in the city it feels more imposing.

I designed the temple with a circular hole in the ceiling. This allowed the sun to shine into the original meditation chamber, and also allowed it to be repurposed as a chimney for the fire burning inside to erupt from, bolstering the intimidating feeling.

Here are some early sketches:

Back in the saddle

I took a week off from drawing for the holiday. I am getting back into things, spent a few hours this afternoon doing an undercity street.
